From: Sandy Goldstien Newsgroups: rec.arts.disney Subject: Disney Garage Date: Tue, 18 Oct 94 00:14:25 -0500 The Garden Grove Historical Society owns the Stanley Ranch Museum in Garden Grove (about one mile southwest of Disneyland). At the museum is the garage which was owned by Robert Disney, the uncle of Roy and Walt. The garage was used by Walt in 1923 as studio where he perfected the animation machine to produce cartoons. The garage was purchased by a group called "Friends of Disney", when it was going to be demolished. After purchasing the garage, the group had difficulty finding a home for the building and some suggested they contact the Society. The garage was dismantled in March of 1984, moved the Stanley Ranch and rebuilt. There is a story that Garden Grove almost became the site of Disneyland. A developer heard of Disney's plan and bought property in Garden Grove, hoping to force Disney into paying a high price to buy him out. Instead, Disney bought the property in another location which was in Anaheim. Tours of the Stanley Ranch Museum are given on the first, second and third Sundays (except holidays) from 1:30 to 4pm. Admission is $2 per adult and $1 per child. A tour of the restored Victorian Stanley home, fire station, blacksmith shop and Disney garage are included. Nancy Goldstien
