Walt Disney ceded his interest in the Mineral King development in the early 1960's after drawing strong protests from environmentalists. The project was conceived, by some at any rate, to be extremely arrogant and of poor taste. Then Governor of California Ronald Reagan helped Walt Disney attain ownership of whatever National Forest it was to be on the edge of. Acreage from the national forest was transferred to Walt Disney and that was what people had a problem with. Mineral King was to be Walt's first attempt at a Resort facility, complete with Disney owned and operated hotels and facilities and would have been a proving ground for Walt Disney World, in terms of operation. Ultimately, Walt accomplished those goals in other ways, albeit scattered in multiple operations. The Surge!
