From: dcpalmer@csulb.edu (Douglas Palmer) Subject: Disney Family Winery Date: 18 Aug 1994 10:34:11 -0700 Greetings one and all. Last week, I spend my vacation in northern california, up in berkley,SF, and then 5 days in Napa. I had always heard about the Disney winery, so i made it aplan on my trip to go see it. (my thanks to teh very nice lady who works in the Wine cellar at the DL hotel, who actauly gave me the name of the winery) Anywasy, Im in the napa valley several times a year, but i had never been there, so it was a treat. As we got there, it is up on a hill, with a gorgous view of the valley. The only shocking thing was, there is not a single thing that is Disney up there. You wouldnt' have know it was related to the disney family at all, unless you know it goign in already. They had 4 wines to sample for free, plus you could sample their merlot fro $1.00. However, the gusy got to talking wtih us, and didnt' bother to charge us. IMHO, I didnt' care fro the wine all that much...it wasn't bad, but just not my favorite. So, if you happen to be in the Napa valley, stop by Silervado Vineyards. They dont offer tours, but they do offer tasting. Its owned by the disney family, not the Walt Disney Company. (i have several friends in napa, and they all say that Mrs Disney (walt wife) still spends several months each year at her house up valley. The Following is being taking word for word from the silverade vineyards hand out they give you at teh winery: Winegrowers in the Napa Valley have always prospercted, in the words of Robert Louis Stevenson, for "those pockets of earth that yield inimitable froagrance and soft fire." Over a century agoe, Stevenson produced a small volume, The Silerado Squatters, which chronicled his brief sojourn in a cabin near a played-out silver mine on the hot southern slope of Mount St. Helena. In his Chapter "Napa Wine," Stevenson described the labors of a handful of pioneers who were attempting to make great wine in the new land. A century later, The Walt Disney family -- Lillian Disney, Diane Disney Miller, and Ron Miller --put Stevenson's prophetic words into action and established Silverado vineyards. Solveradl -- teh name of the abandoned silver mine -- today symbolized the Walt Disney family's commitment to teh future of Napa wine. Tehy are still "prospecting" seeking vitcultural paydirt. Silverado farms over 300 acres in Napa Valley -- in Stags Lep District, source of the valley's best red wine; Yountmille, noted for its spicy Sauvignon Blanc; Carneros, which provides exquisitelky scented Chardonnay; and on the slope of Mt. george, where red grapes like Merlot trhie in cobbly volcanic soils. Our specicalized cultivation always extracts the hightest quality from earth and vine. Built to showcase California wines from california vineyards, the winery was crafted of native stone and redwood on a rocky hilltop abot the silverado Trail, the old Wappo Indian route along the east side of the valley. Inside, the finest up-to-date equipment shares quartes with barrels of french oak, symbolizing silverado's marriage of traditioln and technology ......tehn three long pages of who wonderful each of there wines are. Hope yopu found it interesting. If you want more specifics e mail me....I go to napa a couple times a year. Doug Palmer FDC Wildwing
