While we're moving, please remain seated, keep your hands and arms inside the train and no smoking please, we've doused the smoking lamp. On our round trip tour of the Magic Kingdom, we'll be stopping at Frontierland, Videopolis and Tomorrowland, and then weaving on thru the Grand Canyon and the fascinating primeval world. The coach you are riding in is tied to one of four genuine steam locomotives of the Disneyland Railroad. Since they've been hauling this line, these trains have covered enough tract to stretch around the world 150 times. Now if you here the roar of lions and other varmints, thats cause we're in Adventureland! Lets hope the engineer doesn't slow down cause, this is one part of the trip where we don't want unexpected passengers. Past the tunnel is our first stop, Frontierland station. Gateway to the old west and New Orleans Square. If you plan to disembark here, please remain seated until the train comes to a complete stop. Now arriving at Frontierland and New Orleans Square. FRONTIERLAND STATION! ==================================================================== *Frontierland station to Videopolis Station* ==================================================================== To everyone just coming aboard, Welcome. Please remain seated while the train is moving and keep your hands and arms inside the car, and no smoking please, the smoking lamp is out. We're tunneling under the slopes of thrilling Splash Mountain. The biggest, wildest water thrill ride anywhere! Here you can join in the fun as Briar Rabbit leads Briar Fox on a hair raising musical chase you don't want to miss! Around these parts is even more musical fun as the country bears star in their latest show, The Country Bear Vacation Hoedown. We're now steaming along side the Rivers of America. Settling the wilderness is no task for a tenderfoot. And civilizing this rugged territory is a mighty dangerous job, besides all the usual hardships, some folks bring on their own trouble. Like the careless settler who set his cabin afire over there across the river. Of the trouble he caused for himself, it is nothing compared to trouble he's causing to Mother Nature. As we go further into the wilderness, we'll probably see moose, elk or deer along the river, and if your real quiet, they might even stand still so you can snap a picture. [Live Driver] Ok folks, just up past the tunnel will be our next stop, Mickey's Toontown station, gateway to Disneyland's newest land, Mickey's Toontown. As well as all the attractions in Fantasyland. It will be our one and only stop for the live Beauty and the Beast stage show right here on the Videopolis Stage, the next show is at 7:30pm. Once again this is Mickey's Toontown Station. We're going to ask you to please remain seated until the train comes to a complete stop. ==================================================================== *Videopolis station to Tomorrowland Station* ==================================================================== Leaving the world of Fantasy, we are moving along to the world of the future, Tomorrowland. Back in the old days, all the locomotives ran on two rails, but here in Tomorrowland, they have developed a new breed of train, the first daily operating monorail in western hemisphere. Recently the new Mark Five monorail's were added to the line, where they now glide high above ground between Tomorrowland and the Disneyland Hotel. Around here there are all kinds of ways to move about, from the Autopia, our own pocket sized superhighway, to the Peoplemover, a innovative means of transporting folks, developed here at the Magic Kingdom. Tomorrowland is also the home base of Captain Eo and the Intergalactic adventures of Star Tours. We are now approaching Tomorrowland Station, after a short whistle stop, we've continue on to the Grand Canyon and amazing primeval world. Please remain seated until we come to a complete stop. This is Tomorrowland, TOMORROWLAND STATION! ==================================================================== *Tomorrowland station to Main Street Station* ==================================================================== To everyone just coming aboard, Welcome. Please stay seated while the train is moving and keep your hands and arms inside the car, and no smoking please, the smoking lamp is out. The next leg of our trip takes us along the rim of the Grand Canyon. The wildlife around here is rather sheepish, so please, no flash photography. Long ago, that canyon looked mighty different. The whole place was knee deep in warm primeval seas, swarming with odd critters. They had giant dinosaurs bigger that a locomotive, walking thru the swamps. Our train is traveling back to that time, far into the past, to the strange and fantastic primeval world. Folks, we're now approaching Main Street. If this is your final destination, there is no need to bust your boilers in a rush to leave. Just remain seated until we come to a complete stop, then gather up your baggage and carefully step off the train. Its been nice having you aboard the Disneyland Railroad, and we hope you have a pleasant stay here at the Magic Kingdom. This is Main Street, MAIN STREET STATION, DISNEYLAND, U.S.A. ======================================================================== Subject: DL Train turns 100 Date: 19 Aug 94 08:53:58 PST On Monday, August 15, Disneyland celebrated the 100th birthday of Steam Train #3, the Fred Gurley. quoting from the press release: With turn-of-the-century America as a backdrop, Ron Dominguez, executive vice-president for Walt Disney Attractions and "Conductor" Mickey Mouse will be joined by former Disney Animator and train enthusiast, Ward Kimball. Known as one of Disney's "nine old men" of animation, Kimball shared Walt's love for steam trains and helped the "Fred Gurley" become a part of Disneyland history. Built by the Bladwin Locomotive Works in August 1894, Engine #3 was purchased by Walt Disney from the Godchaux Sugar Company in Louisiana. In 1957, the locomotive, originally used to haul sugar cane from plantations to shipping docks in New Orleans, was brought to the Walt Disney Studios in Burbank, California. Studio designers restored, refurbished and renamed the train after the chairman of the board of the Santa Fe Railroad, Fred Gurley. Since 1958, the Fred Gurley has served as one of four locomotives on the Disneyland Railroad. end quote The ceremony went as described: Also in attendance was Ollie Johnston, another of Walt's animators and train buddies, as well as Michael Broggie, son of Roger Broggie, yet another of Walt's Imagineers and train pals. Ollie, Ward and Roger used to play on the Carolwood Pacific, Walt's small scale, live steam train backyard train. The original "Lilly Belle" train is on display in the DL Main Street train station, on loan from Walt's wife, Lilly. The media for the event were the "E"-Ticket editors and a lone LA Times reporter. Photos and story went out from Disneyland via the AP wire network. I had the incredible thrill to sit behind and talk to Ollie and Ward and their wives during that first trip on the Fred Gurley after the ceremony. Ward showed us his engineer's credential card with Walt's signature (::gasp::) I touched it! Ollie was talking about how it was to throttle up and run the scale live steam back in Walt's yard. The "E"-Ticket back issues #10 & #12 tell the story of the Carolwood Pacific and Ward's part in the Disneyland trains. Issue #19 is due to hit subscribers mailboxes soon and features Ollie's train stories.
