The following facts courtesy ****************, at DL and the DISNEYLAND LINE CM newsletter. ** The Monorail opened June 14,1959 at a cost of $1.3 Million. The original system included 2 trains and covered .8 mile of track. Today, there are four trains with a capacity of 132 guests each in the system's fleet that travel the 2.5 mile route. *** Each Monorail is powered electrically, operating on 600 volts of direct current (DC) transmitted along a pair of bussbars mounted on the right side of the beam. The trains are powered by four 100-horsepower direct current traction motors. For use at DL, the Monorail system has been engineered for a top running speed of 35 miles per hour. *** In 1961 the .8 mile track was extended to include a stop at the DL Hotel, making it the first monorail system in America to run adjacent to a major highway (Harbor Boulevard) and to cross a city street (West Street). *** During its lifetime, the Monorail has achieved many notable milestones. Among them was the attractions designation in 1986 as a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark by the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. And in 1990, the retired MARK III train known as "Old Red" came back to life as Mickey's Mouse-o-rail to tour the country in celebration of the 35th Anniversary of Disneyland. *** Well thats all from the newsletter. Some parts edited for the net. Some other personal observations not included in the newsletter include] an emergency intercom in each car along with what appears to be a ] security camera of some type in the front ceiling area. Big Mickey is watching you. ;) Wheelchairs can be loaded via the fourth car that has folding seats. Thanks for reading!
